Not Enough Press When It Matters Most
Dec 20th
It is the holiday season so it has been especially hard to get our most recent podcast out. While we wait, I felt it especially necessary to comment on what may be the most important moment in our country in the last nine years. The Iraq War is finally, officially, over. Not “mission accomplished” bull shit over, I mean really over. Our men and women are, as we speak, headed home and out of harms way.
I think I speak for many, many progressives when I say, it is about damn time. Our countrymen have been putting themselves in harms way for years, some in countless tours of duty for a cause that many of us do not believe in. I believe that in historical terms, the future will judge this situation more harshly than even Vietnam in retrospect. Not only did we take a huge toll on our country, both physically, emotionally, financially and mentally, but we took another nation with us.
Tens of thousands of Iraqis have been killed, displaced, or forever scarred by the past nine years. We played a large role in this effort and will be accountable for many years to come. We will be trying to heal from all our wounds for years and will have less of a view of how that country heals after we leave.
I am very glad that everyone is coming home and hopefully we can move to a new chapter in these efforts. I have to applaud the approach to this chapter closing by the administration. There has been a low level of fanfare or exuberance, realizing the sobering reality of the moment, unlike others who have tried to capitalize on false rewards. But now is not the time to bicker about how this began or was run. It is a time to rejoice that it is complete.
So this is meant to be a quick thank you to those that made this happen…finally. Welcome home to all those that fought and gave their lives, pride and honor to this great country. You are all appreciated.
NBL News and Feedback Recap
Dec 10th
Listen in right here!
NBL sat down recently to catch up on local and national news and go through all the feedback we have received. This opened up some great discussion on DADT, Tom DeLay, George W Bush’s new book, tax cuts, and other topics.
Some highlights include:
- What is up with ATMs allowing us to enter cents in our cash requests when it knows good and well it will not give us any?
- Local favorite Gourmage is under new ownership
- Wassailfest is now past and it was mmmm mmmm good.
- The Walnut upgrade seems to be in hyper mode of late and is moving fast!
- An all out call for GW Bush to be labeled a criminal and why Matt won’t read his new book
- Pointed questions and review of feedback of the impact of gays in the military and whether the comparison to the integration of the military in the late 40s is a viable one.
- Super kudos to ANYONE who wants to work in the military and work hard for our country
- Matt also goes on a rant about the fact that the concept of “support our troops” has literally been hijacked by people and is spun in a disgraceful way, exploiting our military and wrongfully labeling everyone else.
- Mike gives some comparison to other countries who are dealing with cheap goods flooding local markets, just like the US
- Tom Delay was convicted recently, which begs the question as to why politicians never get hard time.
- Matt wants to know where all the jobs are that the tax cuts for the wealthy will provide? Is someone holding them hostage until they are extended? Why is no one asking this if it is the case?
- Some great feedback in this show surrounds our economic podcast in particular, Potconomics and more. We have feedback from as far as Canada to discuss!
- By the way, here is the link to the full Rachel Maddow interview with Clifford Alexander
Thanks to everyone that participated, and for everyone else, feel free to post a comment, email us, or tweet us and we may include it in future discussions.
Finally, be sure to check out the bumper sticker and wear it if you dare! We have some great ideas for new ones that we will be rolling out, and may add other items as well. All of this is very minimally marked up believe it or not. We are not looking to make any money around here.
